New Smyrna Beach, FL - A woman was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after she was bit by a shark off New Smyrna Beach. According to an email from Captain Tammy Malphurs with Volusia County Beach Safety (VCBS), the 64-year-old New Smyrna Beach woman was sitting on her paddle board in about 8-10 ft of water just south of the jetty Friday morning (April 30) before the bite occurred. Sometime around 9 a.m., the woman was bit on the foot, presumably by a shark. She received lacerations on her foot as a result of the attack and was transported to the hospital for precautionary reasons. While the shark wasn’t actually seen, VCBS is calling this the first shark bite of 2021.
