VSO: Man Who Pulled Knife During Walmart Argument A Convicted Murderer

New Smyrna Beach, FL – On Wednesday a man was arrested after cutting another man over a dispute at Walmart. Now new details say the man who handled the knife is a convicted murderer. The Volusia Sheriff’s Office assisted the New Smyrna Beach Police Department in the arrest of Michael Brown after that altercation. An update from the VSO reveals that Brown was convicted in the 1973 murder of Vivian Oyler. Oyler, an Edgewater resident, was a retired school teacher and the founder of the Southeast Volusia Humane Society. She was 77-years-old at the time of the murder. Brown, who was sentenced to life in prison, was made eligible for parole 25 years into his sentence. By 2010, he was paroled and released from prison. Video of Brown’s current arrest shows an officer and a deputy walking up the driveway of his Samsula home. Brown is seen waiting on his motorcycle halfway down the driveway before surrendering to authorities. He was arrested without incident, charged with aggravated battery and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. On Wednesday (May 4), Brown was arrested after pulling a knife on a man over an argument that started in the Walmart parking lot. The victim told police Brown pulled out a pocket knife and threatened to kill him before swinging the knife at his neck. The victim tried to defend himself, leading to his injury. He was able to grab a video of Brown’s license plate as he fled from the scene, which helped investigators track him down. Brown later bonded out of jail after posting a $7,500 bond.
