DeLand, FL – With Election Day four weeks away, Volusia Sheriff Mike Chitwood and Volusia County Supervisor of Elections Lisa Lewis want voters to know that going to the polls, whether during early voting or on Election Day itself, is safe. The Board of Elections is partnering with VSO to ensure that every polling place is safe for everyone. Lewis says healthwise, precautions have been taken. A number of precautions have been taken, including each voter receiving an individually wrapped pen to mark their ballot and plexiglass shields at each voter check-in station. Chitwood said on Election Day the number one priority is the safety of the voters and the poll workers. "Our job is to monitor the areas. We’re not going to have law enforcement inside of a polling place but we will be in the area close-by to make sure that this is a peaceful election." The number one priority for Lewis is also voter safety. She says voting is secure and that in this day and time, with the pandemic, with the political atmosphere that there is, she wants voters to know that you can come out and cast your vote. Chitwood said that VSO will be working to keep voters safe and that it’s important to exercise your right to vote. "The most important thing that we want to get across, me and Lisa, to all our voters is: get out and vote. We are providing for your safety. No matter who you are, exercise that right to vote. It’ll be safe, it’ll be secure and make your vote count."
