Volusia Principal Resigns After Sending $100k to Scammer Posing as Elon Musk

OAK HILL, Fla. – A charter school principal in Volusia County has resigned after apparently writing a $100,000 check to an online scammer pretending to be billionaire and Twitter CEO Elon Musk. Jan McGee had been the principal at Burns Science & Technology Charter School since its 2011 opening leading up to this bizarre blunder. McGee received a message from the scammer months ago, posing as Musk and apparently offering a multimillion dollar investment in the school in exchange for an up-front investment of $100,000. She was reportedly warned of the sketchiness of the messages by those around her before writing the check. Another administrator of the school is said to have noticed the massive transaction shortly after it happened and cancelled the check before it could be cashed. “I love this school more than anything else. If it means your administration is going to stay, I’m turning in my resignation,” said McGee in the aftermath. BS&TCS has almost 1,000 students with many more on a waiting list.
