The Volusia County government is holding a workshop series in October for those hoping to try out in its Fall Lifeguard Recruit Class. The workshops are free, taking place on three different days during the month of October. Those who attend will receive the training and guidance to help them succeed in the tryout sessions later next month. The sessions will be held on the first three Thursdays of the month: October 2nd, October 9th, and October 16th. They’ll be held at the Daytona State College Aquatics Center on main campus (1200 West International Speedway Blvd, Daytona Beach, FL 32114). Each session will start at 5:00 pm and wrap up at 7:00 pm. Those looking to qualify as a Volusia lifeguard must be at least 16 years old as of April 1st, 2026. Applicants will need to meet several swimming and running goals. For instance, there will be a requirement to swim 500 meters freestyle in under ten minutes, swim 50 yards freestyle in under thirty seconds, and run a half-mile in under three minutes and fifteen seconds. After the workshop sessions, tryouts will be held on Saturday, October 25th at the Ormond Beach YMCA (500 Sterthaus Drive) from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. Another tryout will happen on Tuesday, October 28th at the Port Orange YMCA (4701 City Center Pkwy) from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
