Volunteers Needed For July 5 Beach Cleanup

Daytona Beach, FL – 4th of July fireworks are all fun and games until you see the mess they leave when the sun comes up next morning. And it’s not just spent fireworks that make up the mess on Volusia County’s beaches after July 4, it’s food, plates, cups, cigarettes, broken beach chairs and worst of all, plastic bags, six-pack rings and straws. That’s why Volusia County’s environmental specialists are asking volunteers to join them in removing debris the morning of July 5. There will be two coordinated cleanups between 8:30 and 10:30 a.m. at two New Smyrna Beach sites: Flagler Avenue Beachfront Park on Buenos Aires Street and Mary McLeod Bethune Beach Park on Atlantic Avenue. You can also pick your favorite spot on the beach as your zone to clean up if you wish. And you can even record the trash you pick up using the Clean Swell app and contribute to Ocean Conservancy research. And don’t forget that vags with trash should be placed inside any garbage can on the beach or next to it if the can is full.
