VCAS Microchipping Event This Sunday

Daytona Beach, FL – Volusia County Animal Services (VCAS) is holding its fourth free microchip event since June this Sunday, March 21. More than 900 pets were microchipped during the first three events. Director Adam Leath says the event takes place at VCAS headquarters, 1250 Indian Lake Road from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m.  "We will stay open as long as people are coming. So, if there’s a need and they’re here, we’re going to make sure it happens. We typically get between three and 400 pets at these events." VCAS has been able to identify 35 percent of strays through microchipping identifications. Leath says that statistic is better for everyone.  "Which is actually better than the national average. It’s less than one percent for cats and twelve percent for dogs. The fact that we’re able to reunite 35 percent is better for the pets, it’s better for the owners, and it’s better for the taxpayer." Sheltering costs have been reduced by 50 percent, according to Leath. He says those funds are being saved just through these proactive events, like microchipping. It’s a free call home. VCAS is COVID-compliant, meaning pet owners are encouraged to wear a mask. They will stay in their vehicle while VCAS staff takes the pet for the quick and painless procedure.
