44-year-old David Baker was arrested by the Volusia Sheriff’s Office on Saturday, after he allegedly committed sexual assault and robbery against a woman who was staying in a Daytona Beach motel. Baker has an extensive arrest history in Volusia County, and is in the Volusia County Branch Jail with no bond as of Monday. According to a report by the VSO, the agency received a call at around 4:30 am on Saturday that a scary encounter had occurred at the Motel 6 on International Speedway Blvd. The victim said that when she was in her car she’d been suddenly held at gunpoint, forced into her back seat, and raped by her assailant. After the assault, he allegedly took her cell phones and some cash and fled the scene on foot. Detectives received a description of what the attacker looked like and what he was wearing from the victim, which gave them the information they needed to begin their search. The VSO says it was one of their lieutenants who spotted Baker at a nearby Days Inn hotel down the road. The victim was shown a photo of Baker, and told deputies that he was the man who’d attacked her. A search was conducted of Baker’s hotel room at the Days Inn, where he turned out to be staying. Deputies said they found a pellet gun, along with the phones that’d been stolen from the victim. Baker was charged with armed robbery, theft, and cocaine possession with additional charges pending as DNA tests are conducted. Prior criminal charges against Baker in Volusia County include assault and battery with a deadly weapon, burglary, domestic battery, aggravated battery on a pregnant person, grand theft, introduction of contraband into a detention facility, and fleeing or eluding among several others.
