Daytona Beach, FL – The Volusia Sheriff’s Office is reporting a second apparent suicide by hanging this month at the Volusia County Jail. The most recent happened yesterday (December 21), involving 46-year-old Michael Maydell. He was discovered around 11 a.m. unresponsive in his cell. Maydell was transported to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. He had been arrested on drug, battery, and fleeing the police charges on December 20. The first reported suicide was 48-year-old Brian Allen on Sunday, December 13. He was found unresponsive in his cell during a routine hourly check at 7:06 p.m. Corrections officers performed CPR on Allen prior to deputies’ arrival. Allen was pronounced deceased at 7:49 p.m. He was booked into the jail on Dec. 8, for aggravated battery on a person 65 or older. The Sheriff’s Office says there were no suspicious circumstances or indications of foul play at the scene of either incident.
