Port Orange, FL - The City of Port Orange is expected to hold a special meeting to discuss a new ordinance to regulate panhandling. According to a release from the city, officials have chosen Melbourne-based attorney Michael Kahn, who is better known for his work in drafting panhandling ordinances for St. Augustine and Daytona Beach. Port Orange’s ordinance will prohibit multiple types of panhandling, such as aggressive panhandling, panhandling after-dark, and panhandling to a captive audience, such as people waiting in-line, just to name a few. The meeting will not be streamed live on TV—due to the profane language city officials expect during testimony—but it will still be streamed to the city’s YouTube page with appropriate warnings in place. The first reading of the ordinance will take place Thursday, January 21, 2021 at 5:30 pm in the City Council Chambers.
