DeLand, FL – It started off as a traffic stop, then a deputy found a bucket of drugs and a child in a Sanford man’s car. If that weren’t enough, he tried running from deputies after he was handcuffed. Kevin Harris was pulled over by the Volusia Sheriff’s Office (VSO) Monday (Jan. 3) afternoon for a seat belt violation. The deputy noticed a smell of marijuana and saw that Harris was visibly nervous during the traffic stop. When approached, he told the deputy he didn’t have any marijuana but had a medical marijuana card. But, because of his nervous behavior, the deputy asked him to step out so they could search his car. When searching the vehicle, the deputy first discovered a digital scale with a white residue. Then in the back of the car, the deputy located a large bucket with several prepackaged bags of marijuana, a fast food cup with another bag of marijuana inside of it, and a young child who was in reach of the drugs. In total, deputies say they seized almost 930 grams of marijuana alone. Deputies then searched Harris and felt several “abnormal” objects in his groin area. Harris insisted that the objects were his penis, and kept clenching his legs so deputies couldn’t check. Inside of his underwear, deputies found a plastic bag of fentanyl and 30 tablets of MDMA. They also found two clear plastic bags with pieces of crack cocaine inside. According to his arrest report, Harris had around 6.5 grams of fentanyl, 10.4 grams of MDMA, and about 8.7 grams of crack cocaine. Then as deputies tried to remove the drugs from Harris, he moved his handcuffs around his body, took a bag of narcotics, and tried to run off, just to be apprehended by deputies shortly after. Harris is now charged with attempting to escape; resisting an officer without violence; possession of cocaine with intent to sell; possession of paraphernalia; trafficking in fentanyl; and trafficking phenethylamines. He remains in jail with no bond. Deputies released his child to a family member.
