Multiple Volusia Brush Fires Contained, Officials Say

A series of brush fires in Volusia County broke out over the past several days, with the blazes now appearing to be contained. The blazes started in multiple areas of the county, including Port Orange and Daytona Beach. One fire broke out on Sunday at a campground on Tomoka Farms Road in Daytona. According to the Daytona Beach Fire Department, 20 to 30 vehicles were damaged. The fire was described as ‘fast moving’ with a quick spread driven by windy conditions. Another blaze broke out near I-95 in Port Orange, causing all lanes of the highway to be shut down for a period of time Sunday. That fire, which reportedly grew to ten acres, occurred between Dunlawton Avenue and SR-400. Agencies who responded to these fires included the Florida Forest Service, Volusia County Fire Rescue, Daytona Beach Fire Department, Port Orange Fire Department, New Smyrna Beach Fire Department, Edgewater Fire Department, Florida Department of Transportation, Florida Highway Patrol, and Volusia Sheriff’s Office. The state fire marshall was called to the scene of at least one of the incidents.
