Deltona, FL – Investigators say a 50-year-old man is dead after his kayak flipped while he was fishing on Big Lake in Deltona. The Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission received a call Saturday afternoon (Dec. 11) about the incident, sending rescue crews to the area. Officials say the man was out fishing on the lake with his brother when the two decided to fish in separate areas. The brother returned later to find the man’s kayak partially submerged in the water. A post from Sheriff Mike Chitwood says marine units, dive team, drone team, detectives, a helicopter, Deltona Fire and FWC personnel responded to the effort to find the missing fisherman. Three hours after the call, his body was found. Sheriff Chitwood additionally highlighted two residents, Don and Betty Jo Folds, who provided extra lighting, food, and drinks for first responders as they searched for the missing man. At this time, the Volusia Sheriff’s Office has not released the identity of the deceased. It’s also not clear how the man’s kayak flipped.
