Bunnell, FL - It’s usually good news when someone finds your missing wallet, but not for one Bunnell man who lost his wallet at the scene of a crime. The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO) was called to a home in Daytona North on March 11 after someone called deputies to report that someone broke into one of their sheds. The property owner noticed the shed doors were damaged, the padlock was missing and several items were scattered about the property or missing. As deputies canvassed the area, they discovered a bi-fold wallet that contained the identification of 27-year-old William Medders of Bunnell, a known felon, according to FCSO. Three days later, Medders was arrested on an unrelated charge for criminal trespassing. At the time, investigators found a large number of stolen items were in his possession, some of which matched the description of items that the Daytona North victim had reported stolen. Detectives later met with the victim again at the FCSO Evidence Unit, where the victim identified multiple items that were stolen from him. It wasn’t until Wednesday (May 12) when deputies spoke with Medders again. According to FCSO, Medders could not explain why his wallet was found at the crime scene. He told investigators that all the items found on him at the time of his trespassing arrest were found on the street by him, given to him, or bought by him. Medders then denied any involvement in committing a burglary, but admitted to being on methamphetamine during the timeframe of when the burglary occurred. "This is yet another example of how our investigative team’s persistence proved this guy committed the crime and arrested him," Flagler Sheriff Rick Staly said. "Our lead deputy on this case went above and beyond to get this guy off the streets." "Of course it helps provide an investigative lead when you leave your ID at the scene of the crime you committed!" Medders has since been charged with burglary of a structure and grand theft. He remains in custody at the Flagler County Jail with no bond allowed. This is also not the first time Medders has had a run in with local law enforcement. According to FCSO, Medders has been arrested for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, methamphetamine possession, armed burglary, and burglary of an occupied dwelling, just to name a few.
