Man Convicted in 2021 Daytona Police Shootout

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – 27 year-old Joseph C. Jaynes II was convicted this week on six counts of attempted second-degree murder, relating to a shootout with police that occurred in October 2021. The trail lasted four days. The incident in question was preceded by a break-in call to the Daytona Beach Police Department on October 3rd, 2021, to a Picadilly Drive residence. Officers found no one, but were called back to the same location that weekend. Multiple subsequent calls were made in regards to a dispute between Jaynes and a roommate. On one of them, police say Jaynes fired an AR-15 at police from the tree-line nearby. An armed standoff went on for hours, with Jaynes firing several shots at law enforcement. He was arrested by the SWAT team with a wounded leg. No police were injured in the shootout. Jaynes’ will be sentenced this Friday, May 12th at 1:30 pm by Circuit Judge Raul Zambrano. His charges carry a mandatory sentence of life in prison. He was represented in his trial by the same two defense attorneys who will be representing Othal Wallace, the man accused of fatally shooting Daytona Beach Police officer Jason Raynor last year.
