Local Law Enforcement Taking Part In National Take Back Day

Daytona Beach, FL - Local law enforcement agencies around the area are participating in the Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA) annual National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. In fact, the Volusia Sheriff’s Office is taking it one step further by implementing steel mailbox-style receptacles—which is thanks to a donation from the NOW Matters More Foundation in New Smyrna Beach—that can be utilized all year round. These boxes can be found at all of their district offices and they are available for use during business hours, no questions asked. "We want to encourage everyone to safely rid your homes of unwanted prescription drugs—to help reduce the chance of accident or intentional misuse as well as keeping them out of our water supply," said the Sheriff’s Office in a prepared release. The Ormond Beach Police Department is also taking part in National Take Back Day with a collection that will take place in the lobby of the department’s headquarters from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday (October 24th). The Sheriff’s Office will hold a similar collection event at each of their offices at the same time. Before surrendering any kind of prescription drug, remember to remove all personal information on all labels and packaging. Pills or sealed bottles of liquid are allowed. Vape pens or e-cigarette devices can also be dropped off once the batteries are removed. If the battery is not removable, it’s advised that you check with large chain stores as some might accept the device for disposal. All medicines that are dropped off will be destroyed. Syringes and open containers of liquid—unless it is sealed and not leaking—will not be accepted. These same rules can also be found at each take back location.
