DeLand, FL - Even though it was usually held in public, the City of DeLand will move their annual 9/11 commemoration ceremony online and into a virtual setting. Traditionally, the event is held outside of city hall, but with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the city decided not to hold the event in-person. Instead, the DeLand Fire Department planned a a virtual ceremony. “I am proud of the dedication and effort by our firefighters and staff to honor and pay tribute to the victims of this horrible tragedy,” said DeLand Mayor Robert F. Apgar. According to a release from the city, the ceremony was filmed with the help of DeLand-based The Studio Creative Group. Those wishing to view the ceremony will be able to do so on the city’s Facebook and YouTube pages Friday morning (September 10th). The ceremony begins at 8:46, the same time the first plan hit the north tower of the World Trade Center on September 11th, 2001. The ceremony will also include performances by members of the DeLand Fire Department’s Bagpipe and Drum Corps. and a 21-gun salute organized by the VFW Post 2380. Everything will then conclude at 9:03, the same time the second plane struck the south tower of the World Trade Center.
