A DeLand resident was arrested on Sunday in connection to a shooting that left one victim in critical condition, the Volusia Sheriff’s Office announced. 41-year-old Anselmo Salazar has been charged with attempted murder and aggravated assault. According to a description of the incident by the VSO, the shooting occurred at the 1500 block of West New York Avenue in DeLand around 5:00 am on Sunday. Responding deputies found the victim, an adult man, outside of the residence. He was lying down, conscious, with multiple gunshot wounds. The victim had been shot in the face and hip, the VSO says. He was transported to a local hospital in critical but stable condition. Police and EMS personnel treated him at the scene. He is reportedly expected to survive. Salazar was arrested by deputies at the scene of the shooting. Deputies were able to interview witnesses in the parking lot of a nearby Winn Dixie store, where they’d fled once shots started being fired. An investigation by the VSO revealed that Salazer allegedly got into a dispute with the victim after a night of drinking. As of Monday morning Salazar remains in custody at the Volusia County Branch Jail without bond. In addition to his attempted murder and aggravated assault charge, he also has two listed charges of transmission of harmful material to minors via electronic device. Salazar has only one prior arrest on record in Volusia County, for driving under the influence in November 2023. As Salazar is an undocumented immigrant, the VSO confirmed that they’ve contacted U.S. Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) about his arrest.
