DeBary Hall January Events DeBary Hall Historic Site is planning various events for January that feature helpful hints, history, activity, and fun for all. Upcoming events include: Mimicry and camouflage in nature: 4 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 6. Learn how animals protect themselves by hiding in plain sight with Master Naturalist Roger Fulton. Fulton will provide numerous examples of how creative nature truly is during this free presentation. Welcome to Florida – We do landscaping differently here: 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 6. Join Howard Jeffries for a free presentation on dealing with Florida’s subtropical climate and soil when planning a home landscape. Jeffries is a master gardener with the University of Florida/Volusia County Extension. Get stepping with line dancing lessons: 5:30 p.m. Thursdays, Jan. 13 and 27. Line dancing is a great way to exercise your mind and body. Join DeBary Hall staff for a fun evening full of learning beginner line dances to various music genres. There is a $3 charge for each class. Storytime at DeBary Hall: 9:30 a.m. Fridays, Jan. 7 and 21. Children are invited to Kids Corner, an outdoor storytime. The free program features various stories, songs and activities designed for preschoolers, but children of all ages are welcome. Volusia County’s world-class trail system: 6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 12. Learn about upcoming events, group rides, trail history and plans for Volusia County’s two priority SUNTrails: the St Johns River to Sea Loop and the Coast to Coast trail with St Johns River-to-Sea Loop Alliance President Maggie Ardito. Ardito will also discuss the vital work of the alliance to advance and protect regional trails and promote cycling and walking in Volusia County. Historic bike tour along the East Central Regional Rail Trail: 9 a.m. Friday, Jan. 14: Take a free, guided bike tour from Green Springs Park to Guise Road, 994 Enterprise Osteen Road, Deltona. Learn about the local history from DeBary Hall Historic Site’s staff during a 15-mile ride along the East Central Regional Rail Trail. The ride will include several stops along the way. Participants must bring a bicycle and helmet. Sunscreen, snacks and bottled water are also recommended. Children over 12 are welcome if accompanied by an adult. The Overseas Railroad Cuba connection: 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 15. Learn how Havana and Cuba’s countryside were primary destinations for American tourists during the first half of the 20th century and how the Overseas Railroad facilitated travel to the region. This presentation is part of the free Lemonade Lectures series sponsored by Volusia County. Light refreshments and lemonade will be served. Central Florida’s canids: “Let’s get foxy!”: 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 22. Gray and red foxes call Florida home. During this free presentation, learn fascinating facts about these canids with local author and wildlife enthusiast Marcia Meara.
