One person was killed in a house fire in Daytona Beach on Monday, the Daytona Beach Fire Department announced this week. The blaze occurred at the 600 block of North Peninsula Drive. According to a release from the DBFD, a two-story house with a basement had caught fire in the early hours of Monday morning. Firefighters were dispatched at 12:37 am. It was soon discovered that both floors and the basement were afflicted by heavy fire and significant amounts of smoke. Firefighters forced their way in and began what the DBFD called an ‘aggressive interior attack’ while combing the home for occupants. The fire worsened as firefighters reached the second floor, and additional resources were summoned to aid the response. One victim was located on the second floor, determined to have already been deceased by the time responders arrived. As tragic as their death was, the DBFD confirmed that fortunately there were no other injuries as a result of the dramatic inferno. Within 24 minutes of the alarm going off, the DBFD says they had the fire under control. An investigation is underway, being conducted by the Florida Bureau of Fire, Arson and Explosives Investigations. According to the DBFD, no smoke alarms could be heard when crews arrived on-scene. The Bureau of Fire, Arson, and Explosives Investigations operates within the Criminal Investigations Division of Florida’s Chief Financial Officer, is a law enforcement entity tasked with investigating fire-related crime and assisting fire departments and other public safety agencies. Though they often investigate crime, the bureau’s presence does not inherently indicate the suspicion that criminal action started the North Peninsula Drive fire. The identity of the victim was not released as of Wednesday. The Daytona Beach Fire Department offered its condolences to the loved ones of the deceased. Further information will be added to this or subsequent reports as it’s made available.
