Daytona Beach, FL - After suffering through cooler temps, wind, and rain for a week, residents are getting a much needed reprieve as the weekend is shaping up to bring great weather conditions and a busy beach. That’s according to Volusia County Beach Safety (VCBS), who expect the beaches to be a bit busier than normal, especially with Spring Break in full swing, local events, and Easter just around the corner. With that and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic in mind, VCBS is encouraging beachgoers to access the coast from a less-populated area. Beachgoers are also encouraged to follow CDC guidelines by reducing contact with individuals outside of their group and by refraining from gathering in crowds. If your favorite spot seems full, try heading north or south to a less-trafficked approach. Need to find a ramp? You can find a full list of locations on the county’s website. A recent forecast from the National Weather Service (NWS) in Melbourne shows that residents can expect clear skies and daytime temps around the mid-80s throughout the rest of the week and weekend. But, while the weather is expected to remain rather warm and calm, beachgoers can still expect some potentially rough surf. With that in consideration, Beach Safety will fly the red flag and have lifeguard towers fully staffed. And as always, beachgoers are encouraged to swim in front of a staffed lifeguard tower. “People think that after a few days of rough surf the shift to calmer waters means they don’t have anything to worry about, but Mother Nature can be tricky,” said Beach Safety Interim Director Andrew Ethridge. “In actuality, the shifting currents cause inconsistent sandbar patterns and holes beneath the surface, which can easily trip up or pull out unsuspecting swimmers. That’s why it’s so important for even experienced swimmers to make sure they’re near a staffed lifeguard tower.” It is also possible that morning high tides could delay the opening of beach ramps to vehicles. Those wanting to reach the beach early should consider using one of Volusia’s many off-beach parking lots. But, if you’d rather drive on the sand, you can download the free Volusia beaches app for real-time status updates on vehicle ramps and beach conditions. And as a reminder, remember that alcohol, glass containers and pets are prohibited on Volusia County Beaches. Vehicles must also remain in designated driving areas and observe the speed limit. Trash and recycle cans are placed at regular intervals along the beach, and roving carts will canvass the beach to assist with the collection of garbage. As the old adage goes, "take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints."
