Beach Safety: “All Hands On Deck” For Trucktoberfest

Daytona Beach, FL - It might be an unsanctioned event, but that doesn’t mean Volusia County Beach Safety (VCBS) didn’t prepare for it. "It’s all hands on deck this weekend," said Captain Tammy Malphurs with VCBS. Malphurs also told News Daytona Beach on Thursday (October 22nd) that she has been in contact with other local law enforcement agencies around the county to make sure the laws are followed. No official meeting locations are planned for the event, but oversized trucks are anticipated to drive the beach during the day and cruise A1A at night. Early afternoon high tides and rough surf may also limit beach activities, which could drive attendees off the beaches and back onto the roadways. Beach Safety will also be on the lookout for violations that usually follow along with events such as this, including speeding, excessive noise, alcoholic beverages, careless driving and double parking. “We see an uptick in violations during beach events and holiday weekends, often because attendees just aren’t aware of the rules,” said Malphurs. “So we’ve been in contact with the event organizer and they’re sharing our beach rules and regulations. We’re hoping everyone understands that these rules are in place to ensure safety. As long as attendees follow them and respect our area, we don’t anticipate any issues.” Leading up to the event, Beach Safety hasn’t been the only local law enforcement agency who addressed issues related to Trucktoberfest. Earlier this week, the Daytona Beach Shores Department of Public Safety took to social media to offer guidance on Trucktoberfest. Many local businesses have also filed trespass authorization forms with police, which gives officers the authority to trespass anyone from private properties. Police will also crackdown on "parking lot parties," which was made clear in a Facebook post that said, in all caps, "NO PARKING LOT PARTIES. ZERO TOLERANCE." The Volusia Sheriff’s Office and the City of Daytona Beach have also made preparations for the event.
