Child Killed in DUI Crash, New Smyrna Man Facing Charges

New Smyrna Beach, FL – A New Smyrna Beach man is in custody with no bond after a DUI crash killed a child on Sunday. A release from the New Smyrna Beach Police Department says officers were called to the intersection of State Road 44 and the I-95 on/off-ramps with reports of a crash. Investigators say a vehicle with two adults and a juvenile passenger was stopped at the intersection and began to drive eastbound as the light turned green. A Nissan pickup truck, operated by Michael Miles, was also headed eastbound but failed to slow down. Traffic homicide investigators say the truck eventually slammed into the back of the car. Both adults received non-life-threatening injuries, but the child died as a result of the crash. Miles was charged with DUI, DUI manslaughter, prior refusal to submit to testing, driving with a suspended/revoked license, and DUI causing damage and serious bodily injury. Court records obtained by News Daytona Beach show this isn’t the first time Miles was charged with DUI. In 2012, Miles was charged with careless driving and DUI. Records show the court decided not to prosecute after he pleaded no contest to DUI, which he was cited for. Miles is expected to make his first appearance in front of a judge Monday afternoon (April 4). Information about his arrest, including his blood alcohol content level, was not made immediately available.
