New Smyrna Beach, FL – Both sides of I-95 are shut down in southern Volusia County as Florida Highway Patrol investigates five crashes responsible for three deaths. FHP spokesperson Lieutenant Kim Montes says FHP received a call around 1:30 Thursday (March 3) morning about a multi-vehicle crash near mile markers 243 and 244, near SR 442 in Edgewater. Then, as troopers investigated that crash they received another call about another set of crashes. In total, five crashes are under investigation—four on the northbound side, with one on the southbound side. So far out of those crashes comes three confirmed fatalities. Two people died on the southbound side of I-95, and one person died on the northbound side. One child was airlifted to Arnold Palmer Hospital in Orlando. Montes says that the child is in stable condition. Multiple people, including children, were also taken to area hospitals. Around the time of the crashes, visibility was greatly reduced on I-95. Montes says FHP is investigating the possibility of a fire in the area that could have added to fog already rolling through. “We do a reading with the National Weather Service to look at the potential for the smoke and the fog to mix. However, we weren’t notified of this fire so we are researching as to where the fire came from,” said Montes. Montes added that I-95 is likely to be shut down until the afternoon. Anyone planning to travel between State Road 44 and State Road 5A in Mims will need to seek an alternate route. US-1 on the east side of I-95 can be used as a north/south alternate between Volusia & Brevard. This situation is developing. We will pass along updates as they come.
