DeLand, FL – Two people escape a fire that took out the garage of a Victoria Hills home. Units from the fire departments of DeLand, Deltona, and Orange City along with Volusia Fire Rescue responded to a Curry Rise Court home just after midnight on Friday (Feb. 4). Two people were home when the fire broke out. After their smoke detectors woke them up, they were able to get out of the home and call 911. A report from DeLand Fire Chief Todd Allen says the fire seems to have started in the garage and extended through the roof of the home. Thankfully, the initial attack on the fire was able to keep it from spreading into the attic space and throughout the rest of the home. The main fire was extinguished within 5 minutes of arrival, according to the report. Firefighters noted heavy smoke damage throughout most of the house, but most of the actual fire damage was kept to the garage, which is likely where the fire started. But, the exact cause of the fire is still not known at this time. State officials have been called in to investigate the fire. Red Cross was contacted for the homeowners.
