Daytona Beach, FL – The murderer of Daemon Carn will spend the rest of his life in prison. That’s according to the State Attorney’s Office (SAO) regarding Kevin Simons-Stokes, who was charged with first-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a delinquent—earning him an additional 15 years on his sentence. His sentencing comes three months after his conviction. Stokes was one of the suspects identified following a rash of shootings across the Daytona Beach area in July 2019. In one of those shootings, Stokes was in a vehicle chasing Carn when they crashed. Carn got out of the vehicle along with the other occupants and ran. Stokes and another shooter fired almost 30 shots, with one of them striking Carn in the lower back. He later died at Halifax Health Medical Center. Stokes wasn’t immediately arrested after the shooting. Eventually, then-Daytona Beach Police Chief Craig Capri offered $5,000 for information leading to his capture. Stokes was eventually captured in September 2019, two months after the shooting. It was also speculated that Stokes may have been a gang member, but initial reports from the DBPD said there was no gang connection to the shooting. However, Stokes was later identified as a member of a gang known as “From The Dirt.” That gang was later the focus of a 2020 operation of the DBPD known as “Operation Dirt Devil.” That saw the arrest of 20 suspects, including leaders of the supposed gang.
