Palm Coast, FL – When it comes time to finally take down your Christmas tree, why not recycle it for something that can spruce up your yard? On January 8, the City of Palm Coast is hosting its annual Christmas Tree Recycling event, where participants can recycle their tree and receive a free three-gallon tree or shrub–while supplies last. Carol Mini, the Urban Forester for the City of Palm Coast, said the trees will be recycled for use in the Palm Coast area to help beautify and restore parks and trails in the area. “We utilize them either in the parks, or if we have a trail wash out, we’ll use them on the trail as well,” said Mini. In addition to the recycling event, the city will also host a free paper shredding service. Items that can be included in the shredding are staples, paper clips, spiral notebooks, expired credit cards, check books, folders with small prongs with small amounts of metal and/or plastic. Batteries, three-ring binders, binder clips, hard drives, X-rays, and large amounts of metal and plastic will not be accepted. “The Christmas Tree Recycling event has become part of a holiday tradition for many residents,” said Mini. “It signifies a new year ahead and time to clear the home of the holiday tree and piles of paper.” The event will run from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Palm Coast Fuel Depot on Utility Drive. This event is also not exclusive to Palm Coast residents, as Mini said anyone from the area is welcome to recycle their tree. The types of trees and shrubs given out during this event include: Blueberry bushes–“Climax” & “Becky” varieties–Southern Red Cedar, Dahoon Holly, Red Bud, Itea “Henry’s Garnet,” and Yaupon Holly. Participants are asked to remove all decorations, lights, and tinsel from trees before recycling them.
