DeLand, FL – A DeLand High School student is now facing charges after making a threat to shoot up their school. Information about the incident is scarce at the time of this writing. However, police have revealed that the student posted the threat on social media over the weekend, claiming they were going to shoot up the school on Monday (Dec. 13). A concerned parent contacted police on Sunday (Dec. 12) to warn them about the threat. The student in question, who remains unidentified at this time, has since been arrested. School was not closed or affected as a result of the threat. “We want to assure parents and students that there is no active threat to the school and DeLand Police will have an increased presence there out of an abundance of caution,” wrote the police department in a statement. “We also want to thank those who reached out to law enforcement. It is very important to remember that if you see something, say something.” In the past year, the “see something, say something” rule has been one law enforcement is most keen on keeping in people’s heads. This is especially true in a recent incident where an Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University student planned a mass shooting on the college’s campus the day of finals. Police caught wind of that incident thanks to the efforts of two students, who reported the shooting plot to campus security, who then in-turn contacted the Daytona Beach Police Department. The student in question, 19-year-old John Hagins, was arrested as he was on his way to a gun range—where he planned to practice before carrying out his plan—the morning of the planned shooting. He remains in jail on no bond.
