2 Months Of Sexual Offender & Predator Checks Nets 46 Arrests

DeLand, FL - Deputies and detectives with the Volusia Sheriff’s Office spent two months paying a visit to every registered sexual predator and offender in the county, which resulted in 46 arrests. Authorities began the 2-month joint effort known as "Operation Summer Slam" near the end of June and carried out the checks until August 31st. The State Attorney’s Office, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, the U.S. Marshals Service and the U.S. Attorney’s Office also assisted in the operation. According to VSO, members of their Career Criminal Unit contacted all 118 registered sexual predators in Volusia. Of those 118, 16 were arrested for failure to properly register.  Additionally, their checks on predators also led to checks on about 45 sexual offenders, which led to the arrest of about 30 for failure to register. “These proactive checks are one more way we can protect our community from those who would prey on the vulnerable,” Volusia Sheriff Mike Chitwood said. “Every arrest has the potential to prevent another person from becoming a victim.”
