Ormond Beach, FL – A 56-year-old Ormond Beach man is in the Volusia County Jail after he tried to steal lawn equipment from Lowe’s in Ormond Beach on Monday (August 16). Edward Travers is also charged with Aggravated Assault for throwing rocks at the woman who was following him and videotaping his actions. The woman, Libby Ann Higbee of Edgewater, said she was in the checkout line in the garden section when ‘ the cashier screamed and began chasing this fellow. She immediately came back in to call the police and begged for someone to please follow him. ‘ Higbee said she didn’t hesitate, following several yards behind the suspect while videotaping him. He noticed that she was following him and stopped to throw a rock at her. Just as that was happening, off-duty Volusia County Sheriff’s deputy Anthony Zimmerer pulled into the parking lot. Higbee said that the deputy jumped out of his car and yelled at the suspect to drop it. He did and then several Ormond Beach Police officers arrived and took Travers down. The officers looked at and then downloaded Higbee’s video into evidence. She said they also took the rocks. Both the VSO deputy and the OBPD officers told Higbee that Lowe’s and Home Depot are notorious for not prosecuting, making people more brazen about stealing from them. That doesn’t be the case at this time, with Travers set for arraignment on August 26.
