National Police Week In Volusia & Flagler Counties

Daytona Beach, FL – We’re in the middle of National Police Week and tomorrow, (May 12) the Police Unity Tour will make its way through Daytona Beach as they travel from the Law Enforcement Memorial in Tallahassee and ending at the American Police Hall of Fame & Museum in Titusville. The 320-mile ride is to raise awareness about those officers who have died in the line of duty and money for the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial. Volusia Sheriff Mike Chitwood, now recovered from his accident on his bicycle with a driver on March 18, 2021, will join the riders here for an Honor Stop Ceremony at the Daytona Beach Police Department. He’ll speak at Friday’s (May 14) Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony at the American Police Hall of Fame & Museum. Also on  Friday, the Volusia-Flagler Law Enforcement Memorial Service is back this year – it’s at 8:30 a.m. at Daytona Memorial Park, located at 1425 Bellevue Avenue. The names of all the local law enforcement officers who have given their lives in the line of duty will be read. From the U.S. Department of Justice (USDOJ): In 1962, President Kennedy issued the first proclamation for Peace Officers Memorial Day and National Police Week to remember and honor law enforcement officers for their service and sacrifices.  Peace Officers Memorial Day, which every year falls on May 15, specifically honors law enforcement officers killed or disabled in the line of duty.   To read the entire message from the USDOJ recognizing National Police Week, click here.
