Suspect Charged In Feb. 2020 Daytona Area Homicide

Daytona Beach, FL – A man listed as a person of interest in the death of a registered sex offender, was arrested and then disappeared, is in the Volusia County Jail being held without bond. The Volusia Sheriff Office (VSO) booked 53-year-old Wayne B. Hibbs III yesterday (May 5) after being transported from the Gulf Correctional Institution, where he’d been since shortly after the crime, which occurred on February 28, 2020. Person Of Interest In Sex Offender Murder In Custody The victim was 69-year-old Marc Pinder. Both he and Hibbs were staying at the Speedway Motel on W. International Speedway Blvd., formerly known as the Bird’s Nest. The motel provides housing for registered sex offenders. An autopsy showed that Pinder died of blunt force trauma to the head. Detectives spoke with Hibbs during the initial investigation. He cut off his GPS tracker and disappeared. He was taken into custody some days later and put in jail for violation of probation. A check of both Hibbs’ and Pinder’s GPS put them in their room together at the same time as the murder occurred. No other fingerprints were found in the room. Hibbs left the motel in Pinder’s vehicle just before Pinder’s body was discovered. Detectives spoke with other people staying at the motel, who reported that Hibbs talked about his belief that Pinder would be receiving a large financial settlement in the future, and that Hibbs would get the money if anything happened to Pinder. Others said Hibbs believed Pinder was poisoning him, although there was no evidence found to support that.  At this time, the charge is second-degree murder.
