The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles is rolling out a new design for the state’s driver’s license. Starting on Wednesday, September 30, DMV locations across the state began distributing an updated identification card. Those with the old design on their license will not be required to have it updated to the new design. Current valid driver’s licenses will all remain valid until their listed expiration date. As these licenses expire and are replaced with the new version, they’ll be phased out entirely. The most visible change to the licenses is an updated design. Peppered throughout the card are images referencing Florida’s history and heritage. St. Augustine’s Castillo de San Marcos is depicted on the front. St. Augustine is among Florida’s most historic cities, and the Castillo de San Marcos is the oldest masonry fort in the continental United States. Two of the state’s most iconic wildlife species are also represented: the American alligator and the West Indian manatee. Once an endangered species in the 1970s, protections for alligators have allowed them to rebound to over one million individuals in Florida alone. Manatees are still threatened by habitat loss and development-related water pollution. The alligator is incorporated in the REAL ID seal in the upper right of the license, while the manatee is in the lower left corner. Florida’s most recognizable agricultural industry is given a nod on the new design. The ‘O’ in the word Florida is represented with an orange. By itself, Florida represents around one fifth of all orange production in the United States. The majority of the rest occurs in California. The back side of the new license features a space shuttle launch, paying tribute to the iconic rockets that departed from Cape Canaveral’s Kennedy Space Center from 1981 to 2011. Next to the rocket is a motto depicted on Florida’s first proposed state flag from 1845: ‘Let Us Alone’. This slogan is believed to reference Civil War-era sentiments against the abolition of slavery among Florida plantation owners. It was flown at the 1845 inauguration of the state’s first governor, William Moseley. The new licenses feature a state seal to be used as a security marker. It also includes ‘temporary non-domiciled’ designations on licenses for commercial driver’s licenses and commercial learner’s permits. “Florida continues to set the standard for secure credentialing,” said FLHSMV Executive Director Dave Kerner. “Our last major redesign introduced high security features that nearly doubled the fraud protection measures, significantly strengthening the integrity of Florida’s credentials. Since then, we’ve enhanced our credentialing practices to anticipate emerging fraud trends and strengthen identity verification across agencies. This latest redesign further solidifies Florida’s leadership in secure identification technology and REAL ID compliance.”
