A mother in Volusia County has been sentenced to 32 years in prison following the death of her teenage son on January 1st, 2024. The sentencing came on Monday for 45-year-old Talia Nelson, who pleaded no contest to aggravated manslaughter of a child and aggravated child abuse. In pleading no contest, Nelson avoids potentially standing trial for the first degree murder charge she was initially given when arrested on February 9th, 2024. The Daytona Beach resident is now set to stay behind bars until she’s well into her seventies. According to prosecutors, Nelson’s 14-year-old son died as a result of severe abuse from his mother. The victim reportedly weighed only 33 pounds when he passed away. He had fresh bruises on his face at the time of death, as well as scars on his torso, back, and legs. In her case, Nelson reportedly told investigators that her son suffered from a rare skeletal disease, as well as lactose intolerance and bulimia. According to the State Attorney’s Office, she hadn’t taken him to receive medical care since June 2020, three and a half years before her son died. “This case brought tears to my eyes when I saw the condition of our teenage victim,” said State Attorney R.J. Larizza. “It is incomprehensible for a mother to neglect and torture her own flesh and blood to the extent we uncovered in this case. How could she watch her son suffer for weeks and months and years until he weighed less than a typical 7-year-old child? Heartless and cruel are words that come to mind. May he rest in peace, and may she be forever haunted by her brutal and vicious crime.” The teenager’s death was investigated by the Daytona Beach Police Department. Assistant State Attorney Andrew Urbanak led the prosecution, and Judge Leah Case announced Nelson’s sentence.
