The Port Orange Police Department has issued an update on the shooting at a Walgreens on Taylor Road Wednesday. The shooter, previously, was named as 60-year-old Daniel Lee Asseff. In their update the POPD also confirmed that Asseff was killed with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, the first confirmation of any fatalities from the incident. Officers with the POPD responded to calls of a shooting late Wednesday afternoon. Two employees of the store were found with gunshot wounds. Both were hospitalized, one with injuries to the torso and the other with a foot wound. Per the POPD, the first remains hospitalized in serious but stable condition while the second has been released. The incident was reportedly sparked by a dispute between Asseff and one or multiple employees in the store. Asseff was described as a ‘disgruntled customer’ in the POPD’s most recent statement. When police arrived on-scene, Asseff was reportedly found in the driver’s seat of his vehicle with a gunshot wound to the head. Efforts were made to attempt to save Assert’s life by Port Orange Fire Rescue, but he was ultimately pronounced deceased at the scene. Either no customers or one customer were present in the store at the time of the shooting. As of Thursday the investigation into the shooting is still ongoing. Those with information relevant to the case are asked to contact the POPD at (386) 248-1777.
