A set of human remains discovered in 1997 have finally been identified, the Volusia Sheriff’s Office announced on Thursday. The man who had been referred to as John for over 27 years has now been matched with a name: Ryan L. Stone. According to the VSO, Stone’s remains were found by land surveyors off of the 600 block of Fort Florida Road in DeBary on November 17th, 1997. The remains were in skeletal condition, and accompanied a red t-shirt, Pipeline shorts, socks, and a pair of LA Gear brand sneakers. A study by the medical examiner estimated that the individual had been dead for one to three years. The latest breakthrough on the case came after it was investigated in February of last year by Othram, a forensics firm which specializes in identifying cold case remains. In July Othram told the VSO that they’d matched the remains to a living Seminole County man. All indications pointed to that man being the father of the unknown man. A detective went to interview Stone’s father, confirming that he hadn’t seen his son in 30 whole years. A DNA sample was taken to further confirm the link between the two. It’s said that Stone had gone through a breakup some time around 1993 or 1994, and that he’d left home on a personal embarkment. There were no signs of foul play at the scene, but also no immediate indications of suicide or substance. abuse. According to Stone’s parents, he was a “loving and caring person”, per the VSO. Those who may have more information on Stone or the nature of his death are asked to contact the VSO Major Case Unit at (386) 245-1535, or by emailing Detective Teske at dteske@volusiasheriff.gov.
