The Volusia County government has confirmed that Saturday, December 21st will be the final day of debris collection for those affected by Hurricane Milton in October. The county’s debris collection operation will have lasted just over two months, with retrievals beginning on October 18th. As of Wednesday, crews working for the county have collected over 347,000 cubic yards of debris, according to a press release. The work covered 1,100 miles of roads that are maintained by the county, plus another 500 miles of private roads. Also ending on Saturday will be the county’s debris hotline. Those who still need to reach the county about debris collection have until 5:00 pm Friday to do so by calling (386) 736-5965. In that span, the Volusia County Public Works Administration will still be able to assist with debris-related inquiries. The county government also outlined a list of policies for those who live in unincorporated Volusia County, which go into effect starting Sunday, December 22nd. Those guidelines are as follows: Garbage pickup includes the blue 95-gallon cart and up to two additional 32-gallon containers. Yard waste pickup is limited to 4 cubic yards per week. Limbs must not exceed 4 feet in length or 1 foot in diameter. Small debris such as rakings, pinecones, and Spanish moss must be placed in plastic bags or 32-gallon garbage containers. Whole trees cut or blown down are not included in yard debris services. “Bulky” item collection is limited to four pieces per week and includes furniture, mattresses, appliances, carpet, boxes of miscellaneous items, tires (with or without rims), swing sets, water heaters, and equipment. Bulky items will be collected on the scheduled garbage collection day. Carpet must be cut, rolled, and tied or taped into bundles no larger than 4 feet by 8 feet and weighing no more than 60 pounds. Construction and demolition debris, including aluminum siding, tile, screening, and drywall, is not part of normal residential waste collection. Homeowners are responsible for disposing of these items. More information on trash pickup, recycling, yard waste, and the disposal of other hazardous materials can be found at the website for the Volusia County Solid Waste and Recycling Division.
