New Smyrna Beach, FL - Detectives with the Volusia Sheriff’s Office are investigating after a 75-year-old man fell to his death from a condo balcony. Investigators say the victim, who was identified as John Cheney of Oviedo, and his wife were staying at their New Smyrna Beach condo off of Saxon Drive Monday afternoon (August 17th). Around 5 p.m. that evening, Cheney reportedly told his wife that he was not feeling good and went to take a nap in the bedroom. After a half-an-hour had passed, his wife went in to check on him and found the bedroom’s balcony door open and Cheney missing. The wife then notified her family and walked out onto the balcony to see her husband lying face down in the parking lot. Volusia County Fire Services eventually arrived at the scene and pronounced the victim deceased at the scene. The Volusia Sheriff’s Office and the county’s Medical Examiner’s Office are investigating. VSO reports that no signs of foul play were found at the scene. We’ll update this story if any new information is released.
