DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Community leaders and residents alike filed into the Daytona Beach International Airport on Thursday to welcome in the first arriving flight from Avelo Airlines, the newest airline to add Daytona to its map. The event was little more than two months after Avelo’s much-anticipated announcement in April that they’d be flying in and out of Daytona. Read More: Avelo Airlines Coming to Daytona Int’l Airport Avelo Airlines is offering two flights weekly to each of two destinations: New Haven, Connecticut on Thursdays and Sundays, and Wilmington, Delaware on Fridays and Mondays. The airline offers a lowest-possible-cost product, giving passengers an affordable fare for relatively few in-flight accommodations. With tickets starting at $49, Avelo has been compared to other low-cost airlines such as Spirit and Allegiant. Several members of Avelo’s corporate leadership were on-hand Thursday, as well as Volusia County Council Chair Jeff Brower. Sheldon the Turtle, mascot for the Daytona Tortugas baseball team, made an appearance as well, and passengers from Avelo’s first Daytona flights were treated to souvenirs to commemorate their historic journey.
