Deland, FL – On Saturday (December 12), the first in a series of events that are part of the Spring Hill Strive to Thrive initiative kicks off at the Chisholm Center, located at 520 S. Clara Avenue. Volusia County’s Solid Waste and Mosquito Control divisions are hosting a free collection event for household hazardous materials, electronics, and tires from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event is open to all Volusia County residents. The collection is part of an ongoing effort to reduce mosquito populations by eliminating places where mosquitoes lay eggs, with old tires being a common culprit. Only residential tires will be accepted, and there is a limit of 20 tires per person. Tires can only be dropped off during the event. Tires left outside of the event times will be considered illegal dumping and subject to fines. Residents may drop off old paint, solvents, automobile and household batteries, pool chemicals, pesticides, motor oil, gasoline, electronics, tires, other household chemicals, and up to 10 fluorescent lamps. Insulin needles will be accepted in approved containers; the containers will not be returned. There is no cost to drop off items. Businesses are not eligible for free disposal. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, traffic will be one way. Residents must stay in their cars unless otherwise instructed upon arrival.
